Creation of Green Zones all across Karachi

CREATION OF GREEN ZONES ALL ACROSS KARACHI

Life without technology seems impracticable and human race simply cannot function without different forms of technology. However technological advancements have certain adverse aspects to it which needs to be minimized in order to derive full benefit out of it. Excess emission of green house gases in the atmosphere is one of the biggest issues the human race is facing at the moment. Carbon emission leads to depletion of ozone layer which eventually contributes in an amplified level of global warming and other related issues. KESC, in an effort, to be more socially responsible has planned to create green zones all over Karachi in order to curtail the effect of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere through different production processes.

On November 21, 2009, KESC embarked on a journey towards introducing reforms and eco-friendly changes in collaboration with Pakistan Air Force (PAF) at Base Masroor. Base Masroor covers an area of 6,000 acres and houses more then 35,000 people in different facilities. It is the largest base in South Asia and is known for its expansive runways, roads and other architecture.

Grand inauguration ceremony was organized on Saturday to endorse the partnership between KESC and PAF. KESC’s Chief Marketing and Communication Officer, Head of Supply Chain and General Manager of Corporate Social responsibility along with her team was greeted by the Base Commander and other leaders from PAF at the Base. The team representing KESC was given souvenirs as a token of appreciation to commemorate the “Tree Plantation Campaign”. This was followed by the actual tree planting ceremony where officials from KESC planted coconut trees in the garden and gave a go ahead to plan other trees of various species in the vicinity.

KESC initially plans to plant 5,000 trees which include Coconut trees, Neem trees, Peach trees, Conocarpus and other trees in order to minimize the emissions released by fighter jets. The plantation will help in enhancing the overall ambience of the community and would give a calm/soothing effect to the residents.

As part of its green zone creation initiative, KESC has also started off with internal tree plantation at various office premises like Gulshan Training Center, North Nazimabad’s IBC. KTPS and other areas in the vicinity. KESC also plans to plant trees at Ibrahim Hyderi in collaboration with the Union Council to further strengthen the green zone creation campaign.

KESC plans to look for more areas where carbon emissions are extremely evident such as places near our own power plants to reduce the hazardous effect of green house gases and to convert Karachi into a tranquil city.
