KESC's leadership, along with engineers and managers from various regions were present at this event to create awareness of workplace safety. Mr. Naeem Sadiq, Chief Executive of Quality Concerns was the moderator of the event.
Safety Day 2009 was organized to see "where we are?", "where we want to be?", and "how do we get there" in terms of safety. It is our obligation to protect the health, safety and welfare of our people, and others who might be affected by our business - Zahid Chaudhary (Head of Supply Chain)
An effective Safety and Health Programme has to be implemented throughout our organization immediately. The Safety Programme will assist the people in controlling hazards and risks minimizing employee injuries and preventing damage to KESC property. The programme will be designed to encourage all employees to promote safety for the benefit of their fellow employees. To accomplish safety and health goals, all the members of the management are responsible and accountable for implementing the programme.
Risk assessment is an important step in protecting our people and our business, as well as complying with the law. It helps us focus on the risks that really matter in the workplace - the ones with the potential to cause real harm. In short, a risk assessment involves careful planning and examination of what, during work, at home or in public, could cause harm to people, so that the company can weigh up whether it has taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm.
We are sincerely interested in our peoples' safety. We need to provide safe equipment, adequate tools and training, and the necessary personal protective equipment. It should be our Azm to follow the safety guidelines established for the protection of others, and to use the PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), which KESC provides. Our goal is to educate our employees working at grid stations, power houses and other locations on how PPEs should be used and their importance. We don't have a choice when it comes to choosing PPE's, it's a part of our job - Naveed Ismail (CEO).
"Safety is not a mystery; we all have the ability and concerns to ensure safety, however, we are always anticipating the actions of others." In other words, the perception of employees is that they are not responsible for workplace safety and only the leadership.
Safety is required at the workplace and "Sending our People Safely Home" is our top priority." Naveed Ismail (CEO). The main reasons of accidents in a work place are the refusal to use PPEs, time constraints, laziness and inadaptability to new procedures. Consequently, we encourage our people to take the ownership and responsibility to report something that can be a hazard without letting go unnoticed. Furthermore, we need to protect our co-workers, and members of the public who may be affected by our actions.
This day was observed to support KESC's safety programme. Maintaining interest in safety, expressing the leadership's concern for employee safety, generating employee participation in safety activities, increasing morale and reminding employees to take special precautions is the main aim of the programme.
