KESC TO GET 14MWS FROM TUWAIRQI STEEL MILLS

KARACHI, March 6: The Karachi Electric Supply Company has signed a contract with Tuwairqi Steel Mills Limited (TSML), for adding 14MW of electricity to the power utility’s network. The signing ceremony was held at KESC head office on Saturday, says a Press Release issued here.

This alliance comes at a juncture when the power utility company has been adding power generation capacities to its network, in order to maintain uninterrupted supply of electricity in Karachi. As per the contract, TSML will start providing 14MW of electricity to KESC from May, 2010.

The contract was signed by Mr. Tabish Gauhar, CEO of KESC and Mr. Zaigham Adil Rizvi, Director (Projects) TSML. Mr. Zubair Motiwala, Advisor to Chief Minister for Investment, and senior officials of both companies were present on the occasion.

Mr. Tabish Gauhar said on this occasion: “KESC's management is committed to add more generation capacity to the utility’s network. Since September 2008, we have added 450 MW of internal generation capacity to the system and more projects are under implementation on fast track basis. In future this will enable us to deal with electricity supply position more effectively. Today's signing of contract with Tiwairqi Steel Mills for adding more electricity to KESC's system is another step in this direction.”

Commenting on the collaboration, Zaigham Adil Rizvi, Director (Projects), TSML, the country-arm of Saudi Arabia’s largest private-sector steel producer Al Tuwairqi Holding in Pakistan, said, “This initiative of contributing electricity to KESC’s network is in line with the vision of the company to help meet the growing demand of energy in Pakistan. We are also exploring alternate modes of electricity generation like wind and solar resources.”
